Benelli M3 Super 90 Coming!
The August issue of Combat magazine says that Tokyo Marui is about to release the long-awaited Benelli M3 Super 90 airsoft shotgun. It is very much like the SPAS-12: they use the same spring-powered mechanism, use the same ammo cartridges, and deliver the same velocity. I gotta get one!

Electric BlowBack Pistols!
Billy Bob, one of my BAASH brothers, has some enlightening information about these on his website, Billy Bob's AirSoft Jamboree. Imagine... these airsoft pistols have recoiling slide action, are powered by 4 AA-size alkaline batteries, and cost about $25 USD (in Japan). Heck, I'm gonna buy a bunch of these to give to all my buddies and co-workers. Go check it out!

Event Report: 1999 CAC
Lawrence sent this comprehensive report regarding the first airsoft event of its kind ever in North America. A big surprise is the massive popularity of the Tokyo Marui FAMAS... apparantly, it left even the M4A1 way behind in the dust!
Quote:1999 Canadian Airsoft Competition
Thanks to everyone who came out to help and shoot at this first CAC. Special thanks go out to Tony and James at AMC. Their generous donation of 3 Beretta's as prizes to the 1999 Wasaga Beach Blitz allowed us to secure the location for the competition. Beach Blitz 99 is one of the largest paintball tournaments in Canada and we were able to promote airsoft to its fullest. Special thanks also go out to Stuart, Kim and Pat for helping with the IPSC event. Without their help I would never have gotten this far. Wayne and friend (who's name escapes me at this moment, sorry!) were of invaluable help in reffing the night game held on the Sat night.
The 1999 CAC is the first airsoft event of it's kind in all of North America. Not only did we have a night game from 6pm to 10pm and the IPSC competition, we also had roughly 300 paintball players from the US and Canada swamp both the AMC vendors table and the shooting gallery set right beside. Spectators and paintball players alone shot roughly 15,000 bb's at brass knockdown targets.
Beach Blitz is run by Steve and his incredible staff at Wasaga Beach Paintball near Barrie, Ontario. Wasaga Beach is quite probably one of the greatest outdoor fields in all of North America. Not only does Steve have 15 various playing fields and speedball arena, he also has one of the most professional setups I have ever seen in any paintball field. Wasaga Beach is built on top of an old amusement park and has all of the amenities and resources in which to
build a truly superior field. Beach Blitz is an annual tournament which is in it's 8th year or so. With about $30,000 total in prize packages for many different paintball events, it ranks quite high in terms of complexity and turn out. Promoting airsoft at this event was a must in order to help our sportgrow.
Our shooting gallery is the highpoint of the weekend. Using a 35 foot trailer owned by Wasaga Paintball, we constructed a series of 24 brass plate knockdowns to shoot at. Each brass plate was 6" across in diameter and was set on three rows of 8 targets each. People had a wide assortment of airsoft AEG's in which to select from and the public went wild. At $3 a hi-cap clip of bb's a number of people spent upwards of $30 and even $50 enjoying themselves immensely. The FAMAS was by far the clear favorite out of all the AEG's present with the M4 coming in at a distinct second. Many confused individuals left the table with a huge grin after unloading 2 or 300 bb's for the first time. They might have had a vague idea as to what airsoft was before this weekend but now they truly know.
Nothing convinces like going full auto on any AEG :)
The IPSC competition was another delight with a core group of people shooting repeatedly in the complex Hogan's Alley designed by Stuart Seki. Previously we have billed this first competition as a triple event with three different prizes. Reality set in sort of quickly and we toned the setup down tremendously. Interest was very high but player commitment was next to none. I would like to thank profusely those airsofters who did show and competed. I had a tremendous time shooting and competing against the others and I can't wait to do it again.
For this first CAC I finally decided to go with a small but very complex Hogan's Alley setup with definite tactical overtones. Shooters would be judged by accuracy and speed. The best shooter obviously would have the highest accuracy and the fastest time. We set the IPSC setup in an old, overgrown miniputt course being unused by the paintball field. Two series of 3 and 7 targets respectively made up the course. The complicated part comes next. We dug in 6 foot high false walls covered in black plastic sheet to form obstructive barricades along the pathway of the course. All of the targets (in the 7 target series) were obstructed from view in some manner until the shooter reached the proper shooting positions to engage the targets. To make it even worse, hostage targets were setup in front of some of the targets forcing shooters to be very cautious. Didn't seem as is some of the shooters were too hostage conscious.
Many poor, innocent, white targets bit the dirt, shot down by our intrepid tactical shooters in the attempt at dropping all of the terrorist targets.
Each of the targets were IPSC standard targets scored according to the overlay provided in the IPSC handbook. The center area is worth 5 points and gets smaller as you get further towards the edges. The shooter is restricted to two shots only per target with penalties assessed for too many shots per. Of course hostage shots count as penalties too. We also set a small tool box down half way through the course. Each shooter had to pick up the case and finish the string of targets while carrying the case to the finish.
Stuart Seki is the clear champion out of our mostly novice group of IPSC shooters. His skill and previous experience gave him an edge that we could not beat. This by all means did not make the test unfair. A good friend of mine came in at a close second using my pistol although he had never even seen an IPSC target until that day. We had the greatest time and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Shooters accidentally taking out hostages was a source of constant amusement. Other shooters forgot to pickup the case and others managed to completely forget to shoot some targets in their enthusiasm. Ted ran completely past one terrorist, went "Ooops!" and ran back to take the requisite two shots :) I loved spinning around the edges of the barricades to engage the targets and scoring our efforts gave me a solid foundation with which to improve my skills.
The night game is also another special event not common in the Ontario area.
Once the paintball players quit the field for the day, the entire area was all ours! I didn't play because of all the annoying clean up and organizing that comes with running an event of this size. Roughly 15 to 20 people come out and I've heard that they had a blast. Tracers were definitely the dress of the day with green streaks lighting up the forest near dusk. With Wayne running the games I knew those players who came were in the best of hands. I doubt I could have done a tenth of the job running on fumes as I was. I definitely want to play the next time we setup another one of these games.
The first CAC is a definite success. We made a huge splash in the paintball crowd and I'm already planning and organizing the second CAC. I am ecstatic that those airsofters who could come out did. I know that everyone that went through the Hogan's Alley will want to do it again real soon. I would hope that more airsofters would come out in the future. Without player attendance these events will fail and will actually hinder the sport. Tremendous amounts of effort and time went into organizing the 1st CAC and I am saddened that the efforts of so many volunteers are not being met by the existing airsoft community in the Toronto area. Events and games like this help establish the legitimacy and strength of our sport. With organized competitions and regular tournaments, visibility of airsoft will grow and the threat of an airsoft ban will diminish. Those of us at Eclipse Trading and AMC enjoy organizing these events and I am personally committed to organizing several more. But without an increase in support and larger attendance by existing airsoft players I will be unable and unwilling to continue to extend the effort necessary to run a CAC.
The 2nd CAC is already in the works and preliminary details have already been hammered out. Tactical aspects of the competition will be increased greatly and we are adding a team element to the equation. The scenario for the 2nd CAC will be a tactical hostage rescue scenario using SWAT Break and Enter techniques.
Rough plans so far call for a small team of about 3 shooters entering a walled setup with a number of rooms. A certain fixed number of terrorist targets will be randomly set in any number of the rooms with an unknown number of hostages that need to be rescued. Each team must enter the setup and rescue all hostages and eliminate all terrorists. Like the 1st CAC, speed and accuracy is a must.
To make the scenario even more complex one shooter will be designated a "bomb disposal expert". A "bomb" set with a timer (counting down the length of the mission time) must be "defused" when found. Defusing the bomb will consist of tracing the correct wire in a jumbled mass of wires that connects to the counter. All other wires are connected to an alarm and will go off if cut.
This wire "maze" will be complex enough for a person attempting to unsnarl the mess to take a few minutes but not be too easy. With a bomb going off in X number of minutes, each team must clear and rescue as quickly as possible and defuse the bomb for full points.
Preregistration for this event is an absolute must. Unless a certain minimum number of teams have been registered and prepayed this competition will not occur. Concrete information about this event will be available as soon as details have been ironed out.
Any questions should be directed to Lawrence Song
