UT Mod for some "off-field" airsoft visualization...
Matt sent this:

Quote:

Here something that, while maybe a bit off track, is worth a mention (IMHO)...

The Infiltration mod for Unreal Tournament is WELL worth a look for any Airsoft enthusiasts who also like a bit of 3D action gaming. The mod exchanges the normal futuristic UT weapons for real-steel favorites such as the Beretta M92F, Colt M16a2, Benelli M3 S90, HK69 40mm blooper and even the wall-piercing, body-shattering, tank-busting, Robar 50.BMG bolt-action rifle. More weapons are in the process of being added but the game is already great fun and the firearms totally realistic.

All the weapons have realistic recoil so short controlled bursts are the order of the day, especially when using the M16 and the silenced MP5 (Did I mention the silenced MP5?). Ammo can and does explode when shot at. This means you'd better watch it if you introduce your shotgun to a fragmentation grenade carrying enemy at point blank range (did I mention the fragmentation grenades?). Alternate fire modes are available where applicable to the real steel and you can even adjust the scope zoom on the Robar and the H&K PSG1 (did I mention the PSG1?). Weapons must be reloaded a la Half-Life. For some (like the Robar and the Benelli M3) this means a long and potentially fatal interval without defences.

The damage model has been overhauled to produce more realistic gameplay, you get shot a couple of times in the chest or once in the head and you're history. CQB becomes a frenzied, bloody affair lasting no more than a few seconds for at least one of the participants and long range exchanges are terrifying given the knowledge that each round thudding into the scenery around your player could spell the end of your game. (just out of interest, heavier rounds are capable of passing THROUGH walls.)

I found the single player game more fun after I changed the bot personalities to cautious/evasive and increased their camping/awareness levels. This led to a more tactical skirmish style where the bots make good use of cover and weapons to pin you down and protect themselves. Online deathmatch against human opponents is just downright carnage. You rarely catch a bot using a 40mm grenade launcher or an AT4 missile launcher at point blank range.... (Did I mention the AT4 Rocket Launcher?)

This mod is great stuff if (like me!) you bought UT early this year, went through it in a few hours and have recently got a bit bored with playing the normal game online. Infiltration adds a new dimension to UT that has prolonged the lifespan of my copy with a capital "THREE ROUND BURST".

Yours defending the flag,
Matt.

Coming home
... to North America. Cannes was nice, but Monte Carlo is spectacular! Alas, it's time to go home. A short drive to Nice, a flight to London, then a quick stopover before making it all the way back across the pond to the US.

As beautiful as the French Riviera is, I'm looking forward to getting back to spending quality time with my airsofts and playing with BAASH.

Discovery Channel?
Here's something that Skuzzy posted to the Discussion Board:

I just saw a advertisement for a show that discovery channel is going to be airing tonight (Sunday) or tomorrow (Monday) that deals with Militias. What's interesting/scary is that in the brief flashes of imagery that they showed for the program there was some paintball mask wearing people firing VERY realistic looking guns at eachother, and I'm guessing it's real likely that they were Airsoft guns. "IF" that is actually the case then I pray to god they dont shed airsoft in a bad light. The guns may not of been airsoft at all but it's worth watchin just to make sure. I just thought you might like to know about this.

ASH Interviews X-ring!

While I'm here at the French Riviera enjoying the spectacular vistas and the "beautiful people," AirSoft Hawaii sent me email to say that ASH posted a write-up and interview regarding... me!

Here's an excerpt:

Quote:

Interview with X-Ring
By Matt Zane, Referee

Watching the growth of airsoft over the last 13 years has been interesting. Within Airsoft Hawaii we have seen its ups and downs. In the past it was always difficult to obtain airsoft guns and accessories. You were lucky if there was a store in your state selling airsoft.

Now that is a thing of the past. Airsoft is becoming more popular every day. With the help of the internet, the sport has grown tremendously in the U.S. as well as all across the world.

Nationally, there are more and more retailers adding airsoft to their inventory, and some stores are dedicated to the game itself. More teams and clubs are forming, and websites galore.

In the United States, the rapid expansion of airsoft is due in part to one man, X-ring. His website has helped to spawn a new generation of airsoft players. The X-ring website has been the inspiration for many others to start their own. It is one of the sites to check out to get the latest scoop on the sport. . . .

I'm now in France
... for the rest of the week. Today, the journey began at Heathrow, passed through Nice Cote dAzur, and ended here in Cannes. From the little time I've had here so far, I must say that the French Riviera's reputation is well deserved!

Believe it or not, I'm staying at the Majestic, which some of you may remember from the movie "Ronin." The hotel lobby shootout scene took place at the Majestic. Very classy place.

Anyways, I somehow doubt I'll meet many airsofters here, but hope springs eternal! J

I'm now in the UK
All week, I've been bogged down with meetings in and around London. I hope to meet up with some DoGs and Dolphins this weekend... If not, there's always next time: I will be returning in the spring for a conference, and then again in the autumn for ECTS.
