Remington M1100 (Maruzen)

by Matt Lutynski

I've heard many things about airsoft shotguns, but never actually got to use one. Everybody had mixed feelings about them, but I just had to get the Maruzen M1100 when I got to hold it at one of the shops in Hachinohe, Japan. Needless to say, I put up the 27,000 yen and bit the bullet, and I'm really glad I did.

The gun is a semi auto gas blow back. The extended magazine holds 7 shells, which can hold a max of 10 bbs, but the manual recommends no more than 5. The gas chamber is in the butt plate, which is removable. I never seen something take soo much gas! But the charge will give between 35 and 50 shots. This gun can EASILY be converted to accept external air supply. Performance is quite good for a scattergun, being realistic about range, which is good out to 20-25 yards. With 5 .20g bbs, I can hit a free hanging soda can at 15 yards reliably. With .43g bbs, I can put a bb into a soda can at 10 yards.

I took some flak from my team members the first time out with it. They were worried because there were 2 Japanese teams along with 3 other American teams in the game. I reassured them that I'll be taking my PDW as long range back up. Well, we play our games in the thick vegitated forrest by the beach outside of Misawa. I took up a position is some of the thickest shit you've ever seen. I was about 5 feet in it and had a perfect shot at anyone going by without them seeing me. I waited about 20 minutes and a team of 5 Japanese were approaching in a tight skirmish line. I carefully loaded 2 shells of .12g bbs, 10 per shell, and the rest 5 .20g. The closest came within about 8 feet, then I let the first shot go. I got 3 with the first shot! They didn't know where the shot came from, and the 2 remaining spread out, looking feverishly for me. I got 1 more and another team member of mine took out the last man. True story. I didn't get anymore shit about the M1100 after that.

Maruzen offers a codura shell catcher, which is absolutely manditory, unless you don't mind looking for shells that got thrown everywhere. Also is a sling that holds about 15 shells, and a shell holder that slips over the stock that holds 5 shells. They also offer a scope mount, which I just ordered to mount a red dot sight. The barrel lacks a sighting bead and the clamp that holds the extended mag and barrel extention causes me to shoot high. Also is a cap that goes over the tube mag when the mag extention is removed, which you can shorten like a sawed off gun.

Don't write off this gun, but it does have its place. If it's all you got, you're screwed. It just doesn't have the range, and as an offensive weapon, you're gonna lose. In the ambush role, I believe it's better than auto for the fact that you can fire up to 10 bbs with one shot without giving up your position. It's pretty easy to pinpoint where full auto fire is coming from, even short bursts. Multiple hits with one shot is a reality, I know because I've done it. If you do get one, be smart and carry a good, long range back up.
